“Most of the young people here are either addicted to drugs or alcohol” reported Joella Meyers during a briefing prior to our mission trip this past December. While the Meyers, who operate a Seventh Day Adventist mission outpost in Monument Valley Utah, attempted to convey the dire condition of this community, we quickly came to the realization that we had underestimated the need. Especially among the youth, we quickly saw the effects of modern western ideology mixing with folklore and traditionalism. Its end result: a group of young people tired of the old ways but taking hold of the dangers of popular culture. Depression, suicide, violence, and widespread homosexuality are some of the fruit of this mixed-up generation. Although were able to minister to all age groups, the following are two experiences that directly involved the Navajo youth…
The first was a multi-part addictions recovery seminar. This event actually resulted from a successful health expo at the local high school. We were amazed as we saw the love of Christ softening and subduing those suffering with conflicts and sorrows. One young lady sobbingly confessed that her friend’s recent suicide had led her to experiment with cocaine. After a one-on-one counseling session that day she left with the peace of Christ in her heart and a determination to cut loose from the bands of drug abuse…
Another notable event was a nightly health and gospel evangelism meeting held at a local church. Even though we had little success in bringing the community to the meetings, we continued to meet night after night. Though we didn’t realize it, one of the young ladies who was actually accompanying us to the meetings was fighting a terrible battle. We found out a few days after the meetings had ended that, after a personal testimony from one of our group members, she had made the decision to give up drugs and give all to God.
Throughout the trip, we were able to take in the breathtaking beauty of our surroundings. But though we were awestruck at the towering rock formations scattered across the barren landscape we realized, on a personal level, that there was tremendous need for the source of all glory and majesty to be revealed to the Navajo people. While they were very familiar with the beautiful topography of their land and the rock formations which make it a haven to over one million tourists annually, many have lost sight of the Rock of Ages. Please continue to pray for the furtherance of the gospel in Monument Valley and also for our next Lifestyle Educator mission experience.
